Method
- 1. Mix together flour, cream of tartar, bicarbonate of soda, and anise seed (optional) and set aside.
- 2. Place butter in large bowl and beat until smooth with sugar.
- 3. Add eggs and extract. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.
- 4. Divide into 3 or 4 equal parts. Make them 1/2 inch low and long and narrow.
- 5. Bake middle shelf 400 degrees for about 20 minutes.
- 6. Slice after cooling for a minute or so, place slices side down on cookie sheet and brown for about 5 to 10 minutes.
Notes
You can brown them without turning them over. Handwritten annotations suggest using 3 1/2 cups flour and a little less than 1/2 cup milk.
