  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 3 tbsp anise seed
  • 1/2 lb butter or Crisco 1 stick

Method

  1. 1. Sift dry ingredients together and set aside.
  2. 2. Place butter in large bowl and beat until smooth with sugar.
  3. 3. Add eggs and extract. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.
  4. 4. Divide into 3 or 4 equal parts. Make them 1/2 inch low and long and narrow.
  5. 5. Bake middle shelf 400° for about 20 minutes.
  6. 6. Slice after cooling for a minute or so, place slices side down on cookie sheet and brown for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  7. 7. You can brown them without turning them over.

Notes

Handwritten annotations suggest using 1/4 stick butter and baking at 375°. The milk amount notation ‘less’ suggests using slightly less than 1/2 cup. Some handwriting difficult to read.
